Beaches in Gozo - Marsalforn BeachMarsalforn bay is situated between the villages of Zebbug and Xaghra. Only half an hour walk from Victoria or six minutes by bus. On the way to Marsalforn, on the left hand side there is a characteristic hill know as il-“Merzuq”. From bygone times, people erroneously believed that this hill, because of its shape, once was a volcano. On top of this hill in 1901 a huge wooden cross was erected. Later it was replaced by a stone statue and recently by another statue of Christ Our Saviour. Marsalforn is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Maltese islands. During summer, this bay, throbs with life, since, besides the hundreds of Gozitan families who have a summer house or flat at this locality, many Maltese people cross over from Malta and come to enjoy this lovely bay during the summer period. Leisure activities at this bay are very well served with restaurants, bars, self-catering apartments and hotels. During evening most Gozitans enjoy the old habit of strolling back and forth along the marine. During winter, this bay is pleasantly quite, with only a few residents, most of them fishermen busy repairing their fishing nets or preparing their boats for fishing. Marsalforn offers several swimming and sunbathing facilities, sandy and pebbly beaches. Beside its rocky area on the left hand site of this beach know as Santa Maria Point which is a very popular swimming zone, on the opposite site there is a small artificial port know as il-Menqa, further up Ghar Qawqla Point which also offers a good swimming site. Marsalforn is an ideal bay for boating - boats with oars, motors and sails -, which gives this place a very interesting look in summer. It is also a base for diving, one can choose from a variety of diving schools and diving destinations. A road on the left of this bay leads to two small beaches, Qbajjar and Xwejni, which are separated by a Redoubt built by Victorio Cassar in 1620. These two beaches besides offering good swimming sites, here can find a lot of saltpans, known as is-“Salini” . During 1965 – 1968 a panoramic road was constructed linking Xwejni to Wied il-Ghasri. On the other side of Marsalforn there is a road, which goes up the hill to the village of Xaghra.
